Trends to Drive Kitchen and Bath Design in 2023
I recently got caught up on trends for 2023 via a webinar offered by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) entitled “Trends to Drive Kitchen & Bath Design in 2023”. The seminar provided data from consumer surveys compiled by the NKBA. Here is a recap of those trends and some photos of recent projects and current trending products that we have in our showroom at Foster Remodeling Solutions in lovely Lorton, VA!
According to the NKBA…
First, some data. According to the NKBA, these are the top requests from homeowners (in order of importance):
- Large islands with space for dining
- Remove walls (open concept)
- Pantry space and other updated/upgraded/hidden storage
- Easy to clean surfaces
- Outdoor kitchen space
- Sanitary surfaces
Open or floating shelving is still very popular—my advice for open shelving is to always consider its purpose and whether you can commit to keeping it tidy if it will house items being utilized every day. After all, it’s all out there in the open! I love it as display space more than functional space—show off your collection of artwork or Starbucks mugs. If it makes you happy, it should be on display!
Mixed Metals
Mixed metals are on trend—for example: brushed brass hardware with a stainless steel faucet. Also growing in popularity—mixing different types and sizes of hardware. Knobs and pulls. On my projects lately, I have used multiple sizes of pulls and mixed them with knobs, like these beautiful pulls from Top Knobs. This works especially well for larger drawer bases or appliances. Using pulls from the same family and finish keeps the look cohesive. This project features brushed bronze knobs and pulls in a variety of sizes, including large pulls on both the dishwasher and refrigerator.
Statement Range Hoods
Statement hoods—copper, wood, drywall, stainless steel—the options are endless! Your kitchen hood is often a focal point in your kitchen, so why not make it special? I recently designed a cabinetry hood for a client in Alexandria that features a wood band that coordinates with floating shelves and other custom wood touches throughout the white and gray kitchen. These special touches make it one-of-a-kind. Here is a similar beautiful example of a specialty hood that Foster Remodeling Solutions completed last year. Notice how beautifully the wood compliments the flooring and is picked up in the open shelving and shelving inside the glass-fronted cabinet. Stunning!
Wood and Earth Tones
Wood and earth tones—the project in Alexandria that I already mentioned is a great example of bringing wood touches into your home renovation project. I also love this transitional Fairfax kitchen that I designed that features a wood island. We are still installing predominantly white kitchens—but adding a wood island, wood base cabinets or a wood accent is a great way to warm up a white kitchen and provide some much-needed contrast. Also growing quickly in popularity are green tones, such as these sample cabinet colors from our showroom. Whether it’s a deep forest green or a lighter sage tone, green brings the outdoors in like nothing else. Even using it an accent, like this backsplash tile in my Fairfax kitchen, is so beautiful, relaxing and refreshing.
More Data
According to the NKBA, these are the most popular cabinet colors:
- White (seeing a trend to softer, warmer whites)
- Black (entire kitchens, islands or as base cabinets)
- Gray
- Green
- Wood
Countertops – quartz and quartzite are still the most requested countertop materials, noted for their durability and beauty. Natural stones such as granite and marble are still prized for their unique colors and patterns. I can confirm that at Foster Remodeling Solutions, we are selling more quartz than natural stone, but we do have granite samples at the showroom and access to slab yards in Fairfax County to view natural stone, should you desire that one-of-a-kind look for your project.
