Our client lives in a beautiful historic home in the picturesque town of Clifton, Virginia—originally built in 1896. Although she had completed some kitchen updates in the past, she recently noticed troubling signs of deterioration in the kitchen floor and asked us to investigate. Upon inspection, our skilled carpenters discovered a major structural issue: there was no support system beneath the subfloor. Without proper reinforcement, exposure to the elements had taken its toll, leading to significant rot and a sinking kitchen floor.
Our client saw more than just a problem—she saw a rare opportunity. Though she hadn’t planned to remodel her kitchen, this moment became the catalyst to finally give her 1893 Victorian home in Clifton, VA the kitchen it truly deserved.
This charming home already had a story to tell. A 1950s kitchen addition featured handcrafted cherry cabinets, lovingly built by a former homeowner who was a skilled woodworker. His craftsmanship lived on in the beautifully carved upper cabinets, and we knew they had to be part of the story moving forward. We designed new base cabinets with modern amenities that complemented the originals, allowing old and new to blend seamlessly.
The space was rich with character: roughhewn wood beams, solid wood paneling, and a substantial fireplace that anchored the room. All were preserved and thoughtfully incorporated into the new design, lending authenticity and warmth to the space.
To complete the transformation, the kitchen now features:
- Carefully chosen granite countertops
- Vintage reproduction appliances in a striking black and copper finish
- A deep, saturated wall color inspired by a custom tile mural
- And an antique wall phone that adds a perfect nostalgic touch
What began as a necessary repair became a dream kitchen—now also a keeping room—where comfort, history, and craftsmanship meet.
